HISTORY

The activity of the Cafimar group began in the 1950s, when Captain Salvatore Cafiero acquired ownership of the Scinicariello fleet, which had already been operating since 1880, first with cargo ships and later with tankers. The initiative of Commander Cafiero oriented the development of the group towards the port towage business, initially based in the port of Augusta, together with high seas towage, assistance and salvage of ships in distress.

In the following years the Group increased its turnover and its skills thanks to the purchase of new ships, but above all thanks to the acquisition of concessions for the towage service in ports of high strategic interest, such as Milazzo, Messina, Syracuse and Catania in Sicily, and later La Spezia in Liguria and Civitavecchia in Lazio.

The Cafimar Group is currently controlled by the Russo family and its structure derives from the division of the various companies which took place starting in 1986, following the death of Commander Cafiero. Subsequently, the growth of the Group continued both through the development of the activities already undertaken, through the acquisition of other companies operating in the same sector such as Somat SpA, concessionaire of the towage service in the Ports of Palermo, Trapani and Marsala, and through the establishment of new companies with the aim of diversifying the range of activities carried out and entering other profitable sectors.

The Group's Management records a consistent family presence well supported by highly skilled managing directors for each area of activity.
